Prayers for Japan – Wednesday 16 March, midday

japan tsunamiA short service of prayer and reflection will be held in Christ Church Cathedral at midday on Wednesday 16 March, to remember the people of Japan in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck on 11 March.

Why not take some time out of your day to sit in silence, say a prayer or light a candle to remember those whose lives have been lost and those who face the massive task of clean-up and recovery.

Ash Wednesday

ash-wednesdayThere will be two services of Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday this year. Both will include the imposition of ashes in an ancient reminder of our mortality and perhaps our need to live fully in the moment.

As Bruce Epperly suggests, “The brevity and uncertainty of life now invites [us] to praise, wonder, and beauty, and to seize the moment—for this is the day God has made and I will rejoice in it! All that I love and care for is mortal and transitory, but mortality is the inspiration to celebration and love. Plato once described time as the moving image of eternity. We are constantly dying, but we are also constantly living as we reflect God’s vision in the world of the flesh. This day, this moment, is a “thin place,” for God is with us, revealed in flesh, blood, and healing touch.”

The services will be at 7.30am and 5.30pm – all are welcome.

‘Shrove Tuesday Pancakes’ at the Cathedral

pancakesJoin us on Tuesday ( March 8 ) at 6.00pm as we gather in the Cathedral for a Pancake Tea in preparation for the season of Lent.

The tradition of serving pancakes the night before Ash Wednesday goes back several centuries and has its origin in England. Pancake Tuesday, better known as “Shrove” Tuesday in English-speaking countries, was the day when all dairy, meat and fat left in the house was consumed. “Shrove” is an ancient English word that comes from the word “shriven” and means to confess and get rid of. These products were not allowed to be eaten during the religious season of Lent so they were gotten “rid” of by making little cakes out of the ingredients and then serving them up to the family and community.

We’ll supply the pancakes. You just bring along something sweet or savoury for toppings or fillings and a big appetite.
