Cathedral Building Restoration Appeal
30 years ago the people of Darwin shared in the vision of the then Bishop Ken Mason to build the Christ Church Cathedral Complex to serve the religious, cultural and social needs of a growing city. Bishop Mason wrote, “The Church’s social obligations do not stop with a cup of tea after service but apply wherever and whenever there is need. The new Cathedral Complex will allow a much more effective social outreach to be maintained. The only real boundaries that will be found around the new complex will be very real boundaries of the building itself-its walls and doors-and also the boundaries in the minds of some of the people who cannot catch the vision.”
Since 1976 the Cathedral community has worked to continue this vision, but thirty years of extreme weather and constant usage has taken its toll on the Cathedral buildings.
As we look to the future and renew Bishop Mason’s vision with a strategic plan for a new age, we need to raise sufficient funds to make sure the Cathedral will be a lasting and vibrant part of the Darwin community.
The Cathedral Roof has leaked for all of its 30 year history and each year, despite many attempts to patch it, the roof lets in rain that is damaging the interior of the building. A re-design of the roof will include proper venting and treatment of the large window to facilitate passive cooling of the worship space, and thought is being given as to how to provide eaves to allow the doors to remain open when it is raining.
We need to raise $1,000,000 to complete the renovation and restoration of this most significant Darwin icon, so please give generously to ensure we can continue to serve the Diocese and the city.
