The stories of Jesus’ death in the gospels invite us to reflect on the meaning of suffering and death in our world. We are confronted with our own suffering and struggles and others; we are constantly reminded of the suffering in our world, the disasters and disease encountered by others. The Gospels of Mark and Luke invite us to encounter the face of God revealed to us in the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection and how that face shines upon us.”

Join us 9.30am-4.30pm this Saturday (May 1) as Michael Trainor, senior lecturer in theology from Flinders University, leads the next in the series of Seminars at Christ Church Cathedral – The Face of God in Jesus: A Fresh Look at the Passion Narratives in Luke and Mark.

Cost: $50/$35, includes morning and afternoon tea. BYO Lunch.

“Without equivocation or hesitation I fully and completely admit that I deny the resurrection of Christ. This is something that anyone who knows me could tell you, and I am not afraid to say it publicly, no matter what some people may think… I deny the resurrection of Christ every time I do not serve at the feet of the oppressed, each day that I turn my back on the poor; I deny the resurrection of Christ when I close my ears to the cries of the downtrodden and lend my support to an unjust and corrupt system.

“However there are moments when I affirm that resurrection, few and far between as they are. I affirm it when I stand up for those who are forced to live on their knees, when I speak for those who have had their tongues torn out, when I cry for those who have no more tears left to shed” (Rollins 2009).

The Cathedral labyrinth is a 35 foot replica of the labyrinth that is set in the floor of the Cathedral at Chartres. Walking the labyrinth is an ancient practice used as an aid to prayer. Other practices explored at the Quiet Day were journalling, drawing and silence.

There are three more Quiet Days scheduled for this year – July 24, September 25 and November 27. Mark your diary and watch out for further information.

The labyrinth is also available for hire by groups wishing to explore this spiritual practice in another setting. It has been used a couple of times at the Darwin Women’s Prison and by the people at Nightcliff Uniting Church.

Please ring or email the Dean (8981 9099) if you are interested in hiring the Labyrinth.

If scholars are right—or even in the ballpark– by 2050, emergence Christianity will be the largest group among church cultures, says Phyllis Tickle in an interview with ThinkFwd host, Spencer Burke. That means larger than any particular denomination, and this change is occurring fast. Phyllis says she became aware of the “emergence church” only about two years ago, and the phenomena of emergence-, emergent-, emerging-church has only been around about four years. But Tickle believes that traditional churches have only about 18 months before the window of opportunity to reach out to emergence churches changes into a door of urgent, mandatory response to the changing paradigm of church as we know it.
