About the Project

architects drawingIn 2009, with assistance from the NT Government, a report was commissioned to identify solutions to some of the problems that have plagued the Cathedral building since its completion 33 years ago.

The report made clear recommendations about how we might proceed to fix significant leaks in the Cathedral roof, address the overly reverberant acoustics and improve the comfort of those using the Cathedral through the introduction of various passive cooling systems.

Preliminary estimates suggest that it will cost in the region of $800,000 to carry out all of the work identified in the report.

For a strong foundation: $550,000
So that our Cathedral remains safe and dry, we will make repairs to the roofing, flashing, and windows. The roof, which has leaked for 30 years, will be re-designed and, where necessary, replaced, and eaves will be added to improve shading and the efficiency of the building when it rains.

Inside, we will repair water damage in the Cathedral ceilings, making good the damage done over the past thirty years.
The latest technology will be employed to improve the acoustics of the Cathedral, to improve its use for the arts and community events.

For the exterior of the Cathedral, we will repair and paint doors, woodwork, and steel windows.

Reducing our footprint: $150,000
To increase the energy efficiency of the Cathedral, the repair and replacement of the main window will include a system of vents to improve air-flow and facilitate passive cooling. Suitable fans for improved circulation and ventilation will be installed, and we will reduce the solar glare and heat gain from some of the large windows to assist in providing a comfortable interior environment throughout the year. Wide verandahs along the northern and southern sides of the Cathedral will provide shade and increased capacity.
